Mathematician Mikhail Verbitsky, previously detained in Armenia, flew to Israel

Mathematician Mikhail Verbitsky, previously detained in Armenia due to a criminal case against him in Russia, was able to fly to Tel Aviv, his lawyer Vache Simonyan said, writes Meduza.

Verbitsky was detained at Yerevan airport on Friday, June 12, as he is wanted in Russia. Three days later, the mathematician was released, but due to the fact that he was on the wanted list, Verbitsky was not released from the country.

How exactly he managed to get the mathematician to leave, his lawyer did not specify.

In January 2025, Verbitsky in Russia was added to the Rosfinmonitoring list of terrorists and extremists.

Verbitsky worked at the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics in Moscow, taught at the Faculty of Mathematics at the Higher School of Economics, as well as at the University of Glasgow and the Belgian Free University of Brussels. He is known as a blogger and the creator of Tifaretnik, a platform similar to LiveJournal. He himself described himself in blogs as a “communist,” “anarchist,” and “Satanist”; in the late 1990s and early 2000s he was a supporter of the “Russian world” and the National Bolshevik Party.
