Change of power in London: Keir Starmer leaves the field

For a millisecond on Monday you could forget the reason for the press conference. The waves were benevolently surging at half past nine in the morning applause through the sunlit Downing Street. Not necessarily, said Politics professor Tim Bale from Queen Mary University of London: “As Mayor of Greater Manchester you have to say that Burnham better at it is to appoint the right people and bring different stakeholders to the table to to move things forward.“

Although Starmer succeeded – as he recalled in his speech – in increasing salaries, strengthening employee rights and shortening waiting lists in hospitals, more and more unions and allies have turned away from him.
