Yerevan’s words about the relations with the Russian Federation contradict the steps of the country’s leadership. Zakharova

The statements of the Armenian authorities about the importance of maintaining and developing relations with Russia do not coincide with the practical steps of the country’s leadership aimed at joining the European Union, the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, stated in an interview with “RIA Novosti”.

“We hear the statements of Armenian officials about the importance of Moscow as a partner, as well as Yerevan’s intention to maintain and develop relations with Russia. However, unfortunately, we do not see that those words correspond to the actions and steps of the Armenian leadership, which has unequivocally announced its aspiration to join the European Union,” Zakharova noted.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced in a briefing with journalists last week that he will participate in the session of the EAEU intergovernmental commission.

For a long time, Moscow has been urging Yerevan to clarify whether Armenia continues to remain in the EAEU or whether it is moving towards the European Union.

The leaders of the four EAEU countries called on Armenia to hold a referendum as soon as possible on the issue of joining the EU or staying in the EAEU.

Nikol Pashinyan, however, stated earlier that there is no logic in holding such a referendum at the moment, because Armenia has not officially applied for membership in the European Union and is not close to the status of a candidate for EU membership. According to him, putting the theoretical election to a referendum is not reasonable.
