Ban AfD: More than 1.3 million signatures for petition

The initiators launched the call on Thursday after the publication of a legal report that the AfD classified as unconstitutional.

According to GFF lawyer Bijan Moini, the report by the Society for Freedom Rights (GFF) comes to the “clear conclusion that the AfD is unconstitutional”. The party aims to “impair the free democratic basic order”. In particular, it violates the principle of democracy and human dignity. An AfD ban application would therefore “probably be successful”.

“The excuse that a procedure could fail is no longer valid,” explained Gregor Hackmack, CEO of innn.it. “The GFF report has had an impact that can be measured in real time.” The petition is one of the “largest civil society mobilizations in the history of the Federal Republic”.

The petition is aimed at the Bundestag and Bundesrat and calls for an application to be submitted to the Federal Constitutional Court to examine whether the AfD is unconstitutional. Organizations such as Volksverpetzer and Grandmas Against the Right are behind the campaign.

The AfD received 20.8 percent of the votes in the 2024 federal election, making it the second largest parliamentary group in the German Bundestag. In current surveys, it is by far the most popular party in the country.
