Shooting in Germany, at least 5 people died

A rare shooting occurred in the city of Stade, northern Germany, leaving at least 5 people dead, the suspect’s motive is unknown.

The shooting occurred on the afternoon of June 29 at a youth welfare facility in the city of Stade, Lower Saxony region, northern Germany, according to local police.

Officials said at least five people were killed and an unknown number were injured in the incident. Two people were arrested, including one suspected shooter.

There is currently no threat to the community, Stade police updated at 12:15 GMT (7:15 p.m. Hanoi time). Investigators are collecting evidence and witness statements to determine the motive for the crime.

The incident attracted great attention, because shootings rarely occur in Germany. The country has only recorded a few shooting incidents causing major casualties in the past two decades.

Germany does not ban the ownership of guns, but sales are strictly controlled and people must have a license to own weapons. The country has also suffered many extremist attacks, including a shooting at a church in the city of Hamburg, northern Germany, which left at least 7 people dead in 2023.
