After earthquake in Venezuela: three-year-old rescued from rubble after six days

Emergency forces from El Salvador also reached a 44-year-old under the rubble of a shopping center in the coastal town of Maiquetía on Tuesday night, as El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele wrote on the X platform. The man was supplied with water via a hose while rescue work continued.

The fire department of the Ecuadorian capital Quito, which was also deployed in the disaster area, reported the rescue of a twelve-year-old boy on Monday. “Five days after the earthquake, signs of life are the greatest motivation to continue,” said a post on the platform X. “As long as there is still a chance, we will continue to search.”

Dog “Giselle” rescued

According to El Salvador’s President Bukele, a dog is also among those rescued. The animal, which goes by the name “Giselle,” was pulled from the rubble in the city of Caraballeda after a five-hour operation. In a video you could see the dog lying in his rescuer’s arms and excitedly licking his face. The information about the rescues could not initially be independently verified.

According to the Venezuelan government, the death toll from the two earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 last Wednesday currently stands at 1,943. Emergency services from Venezuela and numerous other countries continue to search for people buried under collapsed buildings. According to a model calculation by the US earthquake monitoring station USGS, the number of deaths could be in the tens of thousands.
