Football World Cup: Mexico’s President’s jubilant warning about England’s clash

After several deaths during World Cup victory celebrations in Mexico, President Claudia Sheinbaum made an appeal to the fans in the co-host country before the round of 16 clash against England. “I ask everyone to behave very responsibly, to avoid places where authorities say there are already a lot of people, and to celebrate responsibly,” she said at a news conference in Mexico City.

Alcohol ban again

There should also be a ban on alcohol again during celebrations on the streets and squares. “Whenever alcohol abuse occurs during such celebrations, problems can arise, such as increased violence, which is precisely linked to excessive alcohol consumption,” explained Sheinbaum.

Recently the deaths had increased. Four people died in the celebrations around the “Ángel de la Independencia” landmark alone. Over a million fans are said to have gathered on the boulevard Reforma to celebrate the Mexican national football team’s 2-0 win in the round of 16 against Ecuador.

In total, more than 1,600 people were treated on site at the Aztec Stadium and at the celebrations in the city, including for bruises, broken bones, alcohol poisoning and anxiety attacks.

Security precautions increased

“There is also an individual responsibility and we all have to ensure that these large gatherings of people are avoided,” explained Sheinbau. The city will further increase security precautions when the Mexicans welcome the English team around Bayern star Harry Kane on Sunday at 6 p.m. local time (2 a.m. CEST/Magenta TV).

In order to equalize the huge crowds of people, there will be a total of 60 free broadcast locations in various parts of the city. These include the fan festival in the Zócalo, the large square in the historic center of the city. Road closures and temporary closures of subway stations near the “Ángel de Independencia” are also being considered.
