Iran, Italian Shiite cleric: “I will be at Khamenei’s funeral, his legacy destined to have a long-lasting impact”

The funeral of the former Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, is an event destined to mark a new phase for Iran and the entire region. This was underlined in an interview with Adnkronos from Qom by the hojjatoleslam (a rank in the Shiite hierarchy lower only than that of ayatollah), Mostafa Milani Amin, who in the next few days will participate in the ayatollah’s funeral in the holy city south of Tehran. “I will participate in the funeral, God willing, with great concentration”, says Milani Amin, who describes the event as the closing of an era. “With the martyrdom of Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, a historical phase that has marked Iran and the entire Middle East ends. I expect very broad popular participation, because for many Iranians he was not only a political leader, but also, and above all, a religious guide”.

The funeral ceremonies, which began at the Mosalla in Tehran in the presence of dozens of foreign delegations, will continue in the next few days with a route through the main religious cities of the country: from Qom to Najaf and Karbala, up to the burial in the sanctuary of Imam Reza in Mashhad.

According to Milani Amin, in the world of Shiite clergy, the figure of Khamenei is remembered as that of a leader who “guaranteed continuity to the Islamic Republic after Imam Khomeini, guiding it in a context marked by sanctions, conflicts and strong international pressure. Many highlight his firmness in the defense of Iran’s independence, his support for religious institutions and his attention to the Palestinian cause and the Resistance movements in the region”.

The legacy left by Khamenei, he observes, is twofold: spiritual and political and is “destined to have an impact for a long time to come”. On the spiritual level, he explains, “his teachings, his lessons and his constant reference to the values of Islam and justice remain. On the political level he leaves an Islamic Republic which, although subjected to sanctions and strong external pressure for decades, has consolidated its scientific, technological and strategic capabilities, contributing to strengthening Iran’s role in the regional balance”.

The Italian Shiite cleric concludes by analyzing the transfer of power from the deceased Rahbar to the new Supreme Leader, his son Mojtaba Khamenei, who he defines as “a figure known and esteemed by a large part of the religious people of the Qom seminary”. Over the years, Mojtaba has been “appreciated for his solid religious education, his deep connection with the seminary and his constant commitment to Islamic studies”, continues Milani Amin, according to whom “after his appointment as Leader of the Revolution, many see in his leadership a natural continuity with the path of Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and place trust in his ability to lead the country in a particularly delicate phase”.
