The Hungarian author Andras Visky and the translator Timea Tanko received the International Literature Prize from the House of World Cultures (HKW) in Berlin for the novel “The Aussiedlung”. This was announced on Friday evening. The book tells about a family that is deported to the eastern Romanian steppe.
The jury said that “The Resettlement” was an idiosyncratic book about captivity. “A wayward book of covenant: a book about the mysterious ability of people to bind together in the face of devastation, when everything else falls apart.”
Visky talks about it in risky language, wrote the jury, which included the musician Joy Denalane. The award is endowed with 35,000 euros – 20,000 euros of which goes to the author and 15,000 euros to the translator. The prize is intended to honor an outstanding work of contemporary international literature in a first German translation.
Poetry honored for the first time last year
The award was presented for the 18th time by the HKW and the Elementary Particle Foundation. Last year, “Autobiography of Death” by the South Korean Kim Hyesoon was the first poetry work to be honored. It was translated by Sool Park and Ulyana Wolf.
