Claudia Sheinbaum: Mexico calls to celebrate “responsibly” at the 2026 World Cup after deaths in celebrations

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum called on fans this Friday to celebrate “responsibly” ahead of Sunday’s match between the Mexican team and England in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup after four people died during the celebrations for the victory against Ecuador in the country’s capital this week.

He stressed that responsibility must be “individual” to avoid large crowds.

“If we see that it is already very full in one place, then we should go to another place,” he added.

The statements occur after four people died during the celebrations for Mexico’s victory against Ecuador on June 30. Three of the victims died from asphyxiation and one more died in a hospital after suffering cardiorespiratory arrest, according to capital authorities.

According to official figures, around 1.4 million people came out to celebrate the victory of the Mexican team in different parts of Mexico City, while around 484,000 gathered on Paseo de la Reforma, Avenida Juárez and the Monument to the Revolution.

On Thursday, federal and capital authorities asked the population to avoid risky practices during the celebrations, such as climbing urban structures, participating in dangerous crowds or performing viral challenges that could cause injuries or even death.
