International Film Festival: Carlsbad Film Festival honors US star Dustin Hoffman

The 60th edition of the film festival runs until July 11th. Founded in 1946, the film show, which initially took place alternately with its Moscow counterpart, is one of the oldest in the world. Every summer, the festival attracts tens of thousands of visitors from home and abroad to Karlsbad, which is located around 100 kilometers east of Bayreuth and 70 kilometers south of Chemnitz.

Football documentary as opening film

During his career, Hoffman was awarded two Oscars for best actor – for his roles in “Kramer vs. Kramer” and “Rain Man”. In Karlovy Vary he took part as a spectator in the projection of the opening film “El Partido” (The Contest). The sports documentary is about Argentina’s 2-1 victory over England at the 1986 World Cup – an emotional event just a few years after the Falklands War between the South American country and the United Kingdom.

Award also for Maggie Gyllenhaal

Actress and director Maggie Gyllenhaal received the Festival President’s Award in Karlovy Vary. This goes outside the competition to “personalities who contribute in a significant way to the development of filmmaking.” The American will show her feature film “The Bride! – Long Live the Bride” at the festival, which was released in German cinemas in March. The American presented a feminist reinterpretation of the Frankenstein legend.
