US President Donald Trump warned of an attack on US identity on the eve of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. In a speech at the Mount Rushmore National Monument in the state of South Dakota on Friday (local time), Trump spoke of a “return of the communist threat” in the country and attacked domestic political opponents as “radicals and extremists”.
“You can be a communist or a patriot,” said the Republican. Trump has been using the term communism more frequently for some time now to attack left-wing domestic political opponents and their positions.
Our American identity is under attack again.

“As we approach this great anniversary, we see our American identity once again under attack,” Trump said in front of the monument with rock-carved portraits of former presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. In recent years there has been an “undeniable attempt” to “change the exceptional character of the United States” and “alienate Americans from their history.”

In recent weeks, Trump has repeatedly attacked the left wing of the Democratic Party as “communist.” The background is the successes of representatives of the party’s internal left wing in primaries before the midterm elections in November.

Trump also spoke of a “communist threat” from immigrants. He was referring to “newcomers” whose ideas contradicted the American way of life and the country’s success. “We will not allow this,” he emphasized. Regarding immigration to the United States, Trump said: “You don’t have to be born here, but you have to love what we’ve built.”
At the same time, in his speech against the backdrop of the famous Mount Rushmore on the eve of Independence Day, Trump painted the picture of the USA as a nation that relies on God. Trump said: “Our rights” were given by God “who created us.”
The 80-year-old also emphasized: “No other country has brought more good to this world than the United States of America.” He emphasized that English is spoken in the United States because it is the language of the Founding Fathers. Trump didn’t mention that a lot of people in the US also speak Spanish.
A big appearance in Washington and a world record fireworks display
The Republican is also using the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence for major political appearances. On Independence Day itself, a campaign-style event is planned in Washington, accompanied by overflights by military jets and a large fireworks display with 850,000 firecrackers. The president wants to set a new world record.
The opposition Democrats accuse Trump of using the 250th anniversary celebrations for a partisan political spectacle before the midterm elections for Congress in November, which are seen as an important test of sentiment.
The USA is celebrating the anniversary in a deeply politically divided situation. Trump’s approval ratings are low. His opponents criticize, among other things, his immigration policies, attempts to expand the power of the presidency and his family’s growing wealth.
At the same time, not all anniversary events met with a great response: a “Great American State Fair” in Washington attracted few visitors and was ridiculed because of its empty stands.
