Drama on Mallorca: German (60) dies during large demonstration on dream beach

I Break – Tragedy on the dream beach on Mallorca’s south coast: While thousands of people demonstrated on the famous natural beach Es Trenc for the preservation of the nature reserve, a 60-year-old holidaymaker from Germany drowned just a few meters away. The accident occurred on Sunday morning around 10:40 a.m. According to Spanish media, the man got into distress while bathing. Lifeguards and the emergency doctor immediately began resuscitation measures and fought for his life for more than an hour.

But any help came too late: According to initial information, the holidaymaker suffered a cardiac arrest. The authorities are now clarifying whether the cardiac arrest was the cause or consequence of the drowning. Witnesses may also come forward. Because: At the same time, thousands of people formed a human chain several kilometers long along the beach. Environmental associations protested that the Es Trenc Natural Park and other protected areas in the Balearic Islands could be protected less strictly.

Apparently no connection to death

The Tod of the German vacationer overshadowed the day of protest and caused consternation among bathers and demonstrators alike. However, as things stand, there is no evidence of a connection between the demonstration and the fatal swimming accident. The temporal and spatial overlap is considered a coincidence.

The demonstration was also directed against mass tourism

Es Trenc is one of the most famous natural beaches Mallorca and attracts numerous holidaymakers every year. The stretch of beach between the towns of Sa Ràpita and Colònia de Sant Jordi is not considered particularly accident-prone, but it made headlines last year with a grisly discovery: on the beach a decomposed and mutilated corpse washed up. Investigators suspected a connection with boat refugees who may have died while crossing the Mediterranean.
