Major fire near Mallorca airport: Fire triggers alarm – this is what we know so far

Palma (Majorca) – A huge cloud of black smoke suddenly rises next to Mallorca airport. Flames rise meters high into the sky, and the fire department and police arrive in large numbers. Because the fire is spreading in the immediate vicinity of the airport, the airport’s fire protection plan is activated.

The fire started around 3 p.m. on the grounds of the Mercapalma wholesale market near Palma (Mallorca) broke out. According to initial findings, a truck caught fire. The flames then spread to other vehicles and also spread to a meadow between Mercapalma and the settlement of Son Banya. The burning truck tires caused a huge cloud of black smoke in the south of the island.

Settlement on Mallorca evacuated

Residents of the nearby settlement of Son Banya were initially asked not to leave their homes. According to the Mallorca newspaper, the settlement was evacuated as a precaution while the fire was being extinguished.

Marga Prohens, President of the Balearic Islands: “We are closely following the fire in Mercapalma. All emergency services are working in a coordinated manner to prevent it Feuer to bring them under control and ensure safety at all times.” The all-clear was given in the early evening: the city administration announced that the major fire was under control. The follow-up work initially continued.

Mallorca Airport on alert

Due to its proximity to the airport, Son Sant Joan Airport was put on alert as a precautionary measure. Despite the dramatic images, air traffic remained without restrictions, according to the Mallorca newspaper.

The cause of the fire is still unclear. No one was injured by the fire. However, two firefighters had to receive medical treatment for heat stroke or heat-related complaints.

Only had in June a devastating fire in an apartment building in the party hotspot Magaluf caused horror. Two people were killed and at least 24 others were injured after the fire spread from an apartment to the upper floors.
