Brussels raises the bar against FIFA. The controversies of recent days were not enough for the sensational backtracking on the automatic disqualification of the American striker Folarin Balogun – readmitted to the field in the round of 16 match against Belgium – that the matter has now landed directly in the European institutions. On the Italian night, Belgium overwhelmed the United States 4-1, eliminating the hosts from the World Cup: but against the backdrop of the sporting result, a political front is already moving. A group of MEPs has in fact started an initiative to ask for an investigation into the role of the president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, and to verify whether pressure from the American administration influenced the decision.
Adnkronos was able to view the letter which is currently circulating among MEPs to gather support. The text, promoted by MEPs Barry Andrews, Lara Wolters and Niels Fuglsang, asks colleagues to sign a letter addressed to the 27 football federations of the European Unionurging them to take formal action towards FIFA.
What MEPs are asking for
“We are writing to invite you to co-sign a letter addressed to the 27 football federations of the European Union”, write the three promoters, explaining that the objective is to push the European federations to ask the highest organization of world football to account for the controversial decision on the Balogun case. The heart of the letter is the request to shed full light on the decision-making process that led to the cancellation of the disqualification. The MEPs are calling on the federations to call for “an investigation into whether FIFA President Gianni Infantino was involved in the decision to suspend the automatic one-match ban imposed following the red card shown to US men’s national team player Folarin Balogun and whether any pressure from the US administration played a role in the decision.”
Il reference is explicit to FIFA’s choice last Sunday, which according to the signatories cannot remain without clarification. “In light of the above decision taken by FIFA on Sunday, we believe that the time has come for the European football associations, all affiliated to FIFA, to intervene and request that FIFA investigate the decision-making process,” write Andrews, Wolters and Fuglsang.
For promoters, national federations have the duty to ensure compliance with the rules within the organisation: “Affiliated federations have an important role to play in ensuring that the rules are respected and that those who violate them are held accountable. In this sense, we invite you to add your signature to this letter,” the letter concludes. The collection of signatures among MEPs will remain open until Wednesday 8 July, at 6 pm. (by Antonio Atte)
