Hospital reform: Protest against the end of the maternity ward in Potsdam

“Instead of closure, we need solutions. Countless midwives and doctors are on the verge of extinction,” said the call to save the maternity ward. On Monday it was announced that the two large hospitals in Potsdam will be restricting their services from August as a result of the hospital reform. The Ernst von Bergmann Clinic in Potsdam will no longer offer orthopedics and vascular surgery in the future. The Alexianer St. Josefs Hospital Potsdam announced that it would withdraw from the areas of neurology as well as gynecology and obstetrics on August 1st.

“The new legal requirements mean that medical services will have to be more concentrated in the future in order to be able to meet the specified quality criteria in the long term,” said Alexianer’s regional managing director, Alexander Mommert, according to the announcement.

According to a spokesman, around 50 employees are affected. For doctors and midwives – they make up around two thirds of those affected – there is currently no prospect of further employment, it was said. Opportunities in partner clinics would be explored for nursing and functional staff.
