National soccer team: World champion Kohler: Klopp “can’t perform miracles”

Former soccer world champion Jürgen Kohler believes Jürgen Klopp is a suitable choice for the position of German national coach. “For me, Klopp would be the perfect man. He brings a lot of what Germany needs again: passion, clarity and emotions,” Kohler told the Munich “Abendzeitung”. However, he made one caveat: “Jürgen is an extraordinary motivator, but he can’t perform miracles either.”

The 1990 world champion continued, “It’s not about just making a few jokes.” Klopp must create a new culture at the German Football Association (DFB). It is crucial that the DFB develops a clear identity in football again. “Germany was always strong when everyone knew what this team stood for: cohesion, mentality, passion and the willingness to invest everything for success,” said Kohler.

Negotiations with Klopp in New York

According to Kohler, the personnel changes at the DFB that many have called for are not necessarily necessary. “A radical change always sounds good, but it’s not about throwing ten people out. It’s about finding the right characters,” said the 60-year-old.

After the third early World Cup exit in a row, German football doesn’t have to make itself smaller than it is. “It’s about finding the right characters. We need players who look for responsibility and don’t hide,” said the former defender.

Klopp is considered by the DFB to be the preferred candidate to succeed Julian Nagelsmann as national coach. According to reports, the negotiations led to a first meeting between the DFB leadership and Klopp in New York.
