Scams in Dalmatia too. Senior citizens lost 38,500 euros

The Split-Dalmatia Police Department reported on Thursday that in the last ten days it prevented three fraud attempts, found the suspects and returned money to the citizens, but it also received two new reports in which elderly people were damaged for a total of 38,500 euros.

The police announced that in three separate cases, the police officers, acting in a timely manner, prevented the completion of frauds committed according to the same pattern, found the suspected persons, reported them criminally and returned the money to the victims.

According to the police, the 77-year-old woman received a phone call on July 14 at around 3 p.m. from a crying person who introduced herself as her daughter and said that she had broken her leg. Then a man who introduced himself as a doctor joined the conversation and said that an emergency operation was needed. The injured party handed over 7,000 euros and gold jewelry to an unknown person, and she was damaged for a total of 10,000 euros.

In another case, on July 15, around 9:00 am, an 89-year-old man received a call on his home phone from a man who introduced himself as a doctor and said that his daughter needed an urgent operation that had to be paid for in advance. About an hour later, an unknown man came to his address to whom he handed over 28,500 euros.

The police once again warn citizens that doctors, police officers and other official persons do not ask for the handover of cash or jewelry over the phone for the treatment of family members.

Citizens are advised to immediately end the call in case of such calls, contact a family member at the number that they know the incident and report it to the police at number 192. They especially invite family members to discuss this form of fraud with the elderly and warn them not to hand over money and other valuables to unknown persons.
