The Republican assured that he had documents that would demonstrate that, since 2020, “the largest breach of electoral data in history”, which would have allowed China “illicitly obtain” the records of 220 million American voters.

Trump claimed that Beijing did not want him to win those elections and accused the US intelligence community of having hidden this information from him during his first term (2017-2021).

The documents released by the White House, however, do not show that the 2020 elections were manipulated or that the electoral result was altered.

The Republican assured that the objective of his announcement “is not to weaken confidence in the elections” but to correct their “vulnerabilities”.

After his defeat against Biden, Trump denounced electoral fraud without evidence, a theory that was rejected by the courts, and thousands of his followers stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021 in a failed attempt to prevent the certification of the Democratic victory.

The Republican was charged for his alleged role in the efforts to reverse the election results and for his alleged responsibility in the attack on the Capitolalthough the charges were dropped after he won the 2024 election.

Before the message to the nation, which several media outlets had anticipated would focus on the electoral system, the former US vice president Kamala Harris warned that Trump would use his intervention to “sell lies and conspiracy theories”.
