These devices can drain your account! The Bulgarian put them in ATMs. ‘Fallen’ in Dubrovnik

The police officers of the Dubrovnik Police Station completed, as they report, a criminal investigation that resulted in the arrest of a 55-year-old citizen of Bulgaria on suspicion of committing a series of criminal offenses related to the installation of skimming devices on ATMs for the unauthorized acquisition of data from bank cards and user PIN numbers.

As they state, the suspected Bulgarian citizen has been criminally charged for the prolonged criminal offense of making, procuring, possessing, selling or obtaining for use funds for the misuse of cashless payment instruments and the prolonged criminal offense of damaging other people’s property.

It is suspected that from May 16 to July 14 of this year, in a rented apartment in Dubrovnik, he made a total of nine improvised devices for reading map data, the so-called skimmer, and a total of eight cases with an improvised device for recording and storing data, which in appearance correspond to an integral part of an ATM.

With the intention of illegally misappropriating card data, he placed the aforementioned devices in card slots or pasted them above the keyboards of several ATMs in the old city center of Dubrovnik.

At the same time, in the apartment where he was staying, he had a device intended for reading, writing and erasing data on magnetic tapes.

It is also suspected that in the second half of May, at several ATMs in the old city center in Dubrovnik, he inserted a silicone object into the card slot, preventing the use of the mechanical card reader, all in order to direct potential users to ATMs where he had previously installed skimmers.

Due to the timely action of police officers, the devices were found and removed, and further misuse of the collected data was prevented.

During the criminal investigation, the apartment of the suspect was searched, when over 80 items were found that are connected to the aforementioned illegal actions.

The suspect, a Bulgarian citizen, was handed over to the detention unit of the Dubrova-ko-Neretva Police Department yesterday, along with a criminal complaint, and the police are continuing with the criminal investigation.

– Citizens are reminded to pay attention to any unusual or additional parts on the device when using the ATM, and to cover the keyboard with their hand when entering the PIN number. In case of suspicion of attempted fraud or misuse of a bank card, it is necessary to immediately inform the police and your bank – said the police.
