Mr. Trump boasted of naming a $1 billion highway in Morocco

“Thank you, respected King Mohammed VI of Morocco. What a great honor!”, US President Donald Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social on July 26. “I hope to one day travel the entire length of this wonderful highway, hopefully soon!”

The post with the video showed the vast desert landscape and part of a $1 billion highway connecting the cities of Dakhla and Tiznit, crossing what Morocco considers part of its southern provinces.

The video describes the “President Donald J. Trump Highway” as one of Africa’s longest roads, stretching across 7% of the continent’s Atlantic coastline. It will be part of a wider network, connecting West Africa via Morocco to the southern Mediterranean coast.

Morocco has not confirmed this information. A government spokesman did not respond to a request for comment.

According to observers, this move will further strengthen Mr. Trump’s close relationship with the country that is one of Washington’s top allies in North Africa.

This is also seen as Morocco’s recognition of the decision that Mr. Trump made in 2020 to recognize this country’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, the disputed territory through which most of the highway passes.

This highway is one of Morocco’s most strategic infrastructure investments in recent years.

In addition to facilitating domestic transport, this project will reduce freight costs, improve road safety and shorten freight transport times between Europe, Morocco and West Africa.

It also forms a vital link to the planned Dakhla Atlantic port, a multi-billion dollar deep-water port that Moroccan authorities hope will become one of Africa’s leading logistics hubs.

Both the highway and the seaport are designed to support Morocco’s broader strategy of positioning itself as a trade bridge between European markets and rapidly growing African economies.

The project also complements Morocco’s Atlantic Initiative, which aims to improve access to global markets for non-coastal Sahel countries by providing alternative trade routes through Morocco’s Atlantic coast.
