Despite the insistence of the US President – and the denials on the part of Tehran, American officials tell CBS: There is no plan at this stage to resume the talks
President of the United States Donald Trump stated this evening (Monday) that the contacts with Iran continue, despite the denials from Tehran. During the signing of a presidential order, Trump said that “the talks are going on right now”, and added that Iran is facing the “last chance” to reach an agreement with the United States.
“We want to give Iran one last chance before we blow their heads off,” he said, adding: “I hope they come to their senses.” According to him, “We will know today or tomorrow where it goes. It’s not that complicated. We are talking about opening Hormuz tomorrow.”
Trump also said that “the confrontation with Iran is going great”, and accused the leadership in Tehran of sending conflicting messages. “They say there are no talks, but there are talks. They just released a message that there are talks. For some unknown reason they say there are no talks, but there are,” he told reporters.
Shortly before that, it was reported on the CBS network that despite Trump’s words, according to American officials, there are currently no plans to resume talks with Iran.
Earlier today, Iran claimed that there are no direct talks with the United States. Later, Trump also responded in a post he published on the Truth Social network, in which he wrote: “The Iranian leadership is two-faced in an unimaginable way. They ask for a meeting, some will say ‘beg’, talks begin and then they say openly and proudly that they are not talking about anything.”
Trump also referred to the words of the spokesman of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Ismail Baka’i, according to which the contacts with Oman are only about opening the Strait of Hormuz. The president made it clear that for him “nothing will go to Iran” unless a deal is reached or “total surrender”.
Just tonight, Trump sounded optimistic about the possibility of an agreement, when he said that the talks are expected to resume and that “there is an agreement on Hormuz, and there will also be an agreement on dismantling the nuclear program.” According to him, he called off the planned attack on Iran after Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Iran asked to allow negotiations to continue.
