Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen posted a photo of themselves on Instagram with a joint statement. “We are united in our desire to protect our countries and Europe,” they reiterated in another part of the message. The two prime ministers, who are currently the only women in Europe leading their respective countries, emphasized their desire to “share some reflections on the future of Europe, the security of its citizens, and the need to defend our values ​​and our way of life,” as Meloni herself later wrote on Facebook. “We are aware that many may question our collaboration,” the Italian prime minister admitted, referring to the different political background of her Danish counterpart, with whom “we certainly do not agree on everything. But we are united by our desire to defend Europe.”

Meloni: “We expect respect from those arriving in Europe”

Meloni then added: “We need to establish repatriation centers in third countries, as well as other innovative solutions outside Europe. We are working hard on this. But this is not enough. Respect for our laws must go hand in hand with respect for European values. This applies to illegal migrants, but also to the millions of foreign citizens living legally in our countries and throughout Europe. We are both proud of Europe’s Christian cultural heritage and want to protect it. We expect those arriving in our countries and choosing to make Europe their home to respect our values ​​and not try to impose lifestyles we don’t share. We believe this is the right way to protect Europe and our common values. And we believe that millions of Europeans share this belief.”

The two prime ministers emphasized that “we do not accept uncontrolled immigration into Europe. No one can deny the negative impacts of illegal immigration on our societies: rising crime rates, increasing pressure on public services, and the erosion of citizens’ trust.” They went on to emphasize that “it is particularly serious when illegal migrants, deprived of the right to remain in our countries, commit violent crimes, traffic drugs, or are responsible for sexual violence.” European citizens, they argued, “expect concrete action from their political representatives. For too long, ordinary people in particular have paid too high a price due to uncontrolled immigration. It is our duty to continue to work with determination to provide concrete solutions to citizens, especially those most vulnerable, and to ensure greater safety and protection for our communities.”
