A 13-year global assessment conducted by Unbound across 16 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America confirms that family-led development is the most effective driver for overcoming poverty. By receiving direct cash transfers into their bank accounts, families gain autonomy to set priorities and transform their communities.

How does Unbound’s support model work in communities?

The model deviates from traditional assistance. Instead of donating finished goods, the organization transfers financial resources directly to families’ bank accounts. Since its founding, Unbound has raised US$3 billion, sending US$2.5 billion of that directly to beneficiaries. The central idea is that no one knows better what a family needs than the members themselves. This decentralized method allows mothers and guardians to decide where to invest their money, whether in food, education or small businesses, generating dignity and financial responsibility.

What were the main impacts identified on female empowerment?

Research carried out with more than 2,300 women revealed that program participants have much higher levels of confidence and financial inclusion. In Guatemala, for example, 70% of women served have their own bank account, compared to just 24% of those on the waiting list. In Kenya, access to credit almost doubles among participants. This banking inclusion is essential because it takes women out of economic invisibility, allowing them to make plans for the future, make decisions about the household budget and take on leadership roles in their neighborhoods and villages.

What is the Poverty Traffic Light and how does it help families?

The Poverty Traffic Light is a practical measurement tool that helps people map their lives. They use colors to classify different areas: green for no poverty, yellow for moderate poverty and red for extreme cases. With this visual map, the family creates a path to transform ‘red’ into ‘green’. The 2025 analysis showed impressive results: almost half of participating families have already surpassed the 60% green indicator barrier. It’s a way to provide clarity about what needs to be improved, whether it’s access to clean water or the quality of housing.

What are the organization’s new plans for children and seniors?

The good results led to the expansion of service targets. For seniors, data shows they feel less loneliness and are 66% more likely to receive adequate medical care. Therefore, the organization will increase sponsorship for senior citizens until 2030. For younger people, the Agents of Change Kids program will be launched in 2027. The objective is to teach children and adolescents to make decisions and solve community problems from an early age. Thus, autonomy is not restricted to parents, creating a new generation capable of keeping the family out of poverty in a sustainable way.
