King Harald V of Norway was admitted this Monday to the Oslo University Hospital for fluid retention after undergoing a medical examination due to the treatment he has been taking for several weeks for his hemolytic anemia.
“In recent weeks, the King has been receiving cortisone treatment for hemolytic anemia, a blood disease. This has caused an accumulation of fluid in his body that requires hospitalization,” the Norwegian Royal House said in a brief statement.
Given this situation that affects the monarch, 89 years old and on the throne since 1991, Crown Prince Haakon will serve as regent during the two weeks that Harald V is on sick leave. “Later we will analyze the consequences that this will have for the official agenda of the Royal House,” he added.
The monarch was discharged at the end of February after recovering “quickly” from a skin infection on his leg that led him to be admitted to the University Hospital of Santa Cruz de Tenerife during his vacation with his wife, Sonia of Norway.
Harald V from Norway was admitted for an “infection” and “dehydration”, although he was in “good condition” and responded positively to treatment. This again forced Haakon to serve as regent until March 6.
