Electoral reform and security. The challenges of the center-right after the summer

From the reform of electoral law to the new security bill, approved in mid-July by the government, without forgetting the rules on fuel, migrants and the former Ilva: there are many challenges that will present themselves to the government majority and the executive starting from September, after the summer break.

In the first days of the month the spotlight will certainly be on Senate committees who will examine the electoral law. Amendments must be submitted by September 1st. The exam in the Palazzo Madama classroom should then begin on September 9th and the final grade is expected by the 15th of the same month. The objective is to reach the third reading in the Chamberand then close the matter by the end of September.

The knots of the electoral law

The main issue still to be resolved, within the centre-right, concerns the question of preferences: “It’s not that we don’t want preferences but it’s useless to shout just for the sake of shouting. To be there, we need to have the votes and therefore we need an amendment that acts as a mediator”, said the president of the Senate yesterday, Ignazio La Russaspeaking at the FdI ‘Bar Italia’ initiative, in Ragalna, in the Catania area. In any case, La Russa clarified, “by October the answer” on the electoral law “will arrive: either we close it or we don’t close it, but an answer will arrive”. It cannot be ruled out that, in order to avoid surprises, after the vote in the Senate it will not be decided to resort to confidence in the final step in Montecitorio.

The security bill

In the Chamber, in fact, the majority has already gone down on preferences and it is widely believed that another possible negative vote could not fail to have effects on the government coalition. Another measure to be approved will be the new one security billwhich contains rules to combat those phenomena of group violence which are increasingly involving minors. The text also provides that anyone who suffers damage while committing a crime will no longer be able to request compensation in civil proceedings, regardless of any criminal liability of those who defended themselves from an assault, theft or robbery.

The other government files

The reduction of taxes, the strengthening of purchasing power and increasingly stable employment are other issues that the government and the majority will have to continue to address.

On 4 September Meloni will then be in Bari to celebrate the government’s record of longevity, accompanied by ministers and parliamentarians. At the end of the month he will instead travel to New York to participate in the United Nations general assembly.
