The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that it had reached an agreement with Oman on control of the Strait of Hormuz. According to the statement, it also includes a section of duties imposed for passage through the waterway.
“The strait belongs to our two countries – Iran and Oman, located on its opposite banks. The agreement reached is acceptable to both states. It concerns both the share in the waters of Hormuz and in the income from the passage of ships,” the IRGC states.
It is emphasized that the negotiations would have ended much earlier if not for US intervention. It is also reported that traffic through the strait will not be resumed until the US lifts the blockade of the Iranian coast. No additional details are provided.
Let us note that not only the United States, but also such states in the region as Türkiye and Egypt insist that passage should be free. The UN also demands this. Hormuz is one of the most important waterways in the world, and for thousands of years passage through it has been duty-free.
