Terrible storm near Cyprus: Three ships hit the rocks and sank, one person died

One person died and six were rescued after a strong storm accompanied by rough seas caused three ships to hit rocks and sink near Cyprus on Saturday, local media reported.

A man was pulled unconscious from the sea by a rescue helicopter near Cape Greco on the southeast coast of the island and was subsequently declared dead, while the two survivors were kept in hospital for treatment, the Sigmalive portal reported.

Heavy rain and strong winds hit the Mediterranean island on Saturday, flooding streets, triggering landslides and toppling numerous trees.

The fire department received numerous emergency calls due to storm damage. The spokesman of the fire service said that most of the interventions were in the area around the capital city of Nicosia.
