Purchase of helicopters expands Argentina-US military partnership

In a statement, the US State Department reported that the transaction will have a value of US$140 million.

At X, the United States ambassador to Argentina, Peter Lamelas, celebrated the sale. “Argentina will receive refurbished Black Hawk helicopters in staggered deliveries, starting with four units, to strengthen defense and respond to emergencies. It’s not just about equipment: it’s about arriving on time and saving lives,” he wrote.

“We continue to work with Argentina to help build a stronger and safer country,” added Lamelas.

In addition to trade, Buenos Aires and Washington have expanded their partnerships in the area of ​​defense. Milei joined the Peace Council this year, the group created by Trump to rebuild the Gaza Strip and mediate other conflicts around the world. This accession still needs to be approved by the Argentine Congress.

Argentina also joined the Shield of the Americas plan and the two countries reached an agreement through which the USA will help in the modernization of the Argentine Navy’s infrastructure and received authorization for forces from the American Southern Command to participate in the patrolling of southern Argentine waters.

Additionally, Argentina is purchasing 24 F-16 fighter jets (also American-made) from Denmark, which are arriving in annual batches of six through 2028, with the transfer approved by Washington, which also provided $40 million to help with the $560 million deal, as well as training, maintenance and long-term support.

Other agreements involve the reciprocal supply of fuel during military operations and facilitating the acquisition of military technology and drones by Buenos Aires.

Last week, Milei announced sanctions on companies that explore natural resources in the Falkland Islands, disputed with the United Kingdom, and that he will build an integrated naval base in the province of Tierra del Fuego.

Milei’s announcement came days after Trump spoke about the possibility of reassessing the US position on Argentina and the United Kingdom’s dispute over the Falklands, which is currently one of neutrality, but recognizing British control over the islands.
