The US court struck down Mr. Trump’s order restricting mail-in voting

President Trump in March signed an executive order requiring the creation of a list of eligible voters and forcing the US Postal Service (USPS) to only issue ballots to those whose names are on it. Mr. Trump’s document quickly faced many legal challenges.

Indira Talwani, a federal judge in Massachusetts, accepted two of a series of lawsuits filed by Democrats and voting rights groups. Ms. Talwani then ordered the suspension of President Trump’s order and banned the implementation of this regulation after November.

Ms. Talwani’s ruling was overturned in August, but was later reinstated. The Trump administration appealed to the Supreme Court, arguing that government control of the postal service allows it to set the rules for handling mail ballots.

In its ruling on September 14, the Supreme Court found that it was difficult for President Trump’s administration to prove the legality of the decree, and there was not enough basis to request the court to intervene urgently to lift the lower court’s ban.

The decision was passed by a panel of 9 judges, of which 7 were in favor and two conservative judges voted against.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh, one of 7 people who gave a concurring opinion, said that President Donald Trump’s plan may be legal in the long run, but local election officials “do not have enough time to properly implement it before voting day.”

Concerns about the executive order’s feasibility were heightened when a postal industry whistleblower warned that the USPS system is currently set up “too sloppily and hastily,” potentially leaving millions of Americans without timely ballots.

Mr. Trump has long criticized mail-in voting, despite using this form in the past, including in the Republican primary election in Florida earlier this year. Mr. Trump has also repeatedly said that it is easy for fraud to occur when voting by mail, even though there is no evidence of this.

Recent polls show that Mr. Trump’s Republican Party is at risk of losing its fragile majority in Congress after the election in November, especially in the House of Representatives.

Democrats signaled that if they win, they will block President Trump’s agenda and may consider impeaching him for a third time.
