The Iranian Parliament processes an initiative for the withdrawal of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

Iranian deputy Ali Hayideliganí has ​​announced the presentation of an urgent initiative for the Iranian Majlis or Parliament to approve Iran’s withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in response to the attacks by the United States and Israel.

“Recently several representatives have presented a three-point plan for the withdrawal of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty that must be included in the agenda by the Table because given the country’s specific conditions, continuing in the NPT only harms the country,” Hayideliganí explained in statements reported by the Iranian newspaper ‘Sharg’.

Also the director of the National Security Commission of the Iranian Parliament, Ibrahim Azizi, has stated that the option of leaving the NPT “is on the table.”

“Plans have been prepared in Parliament for the withdrawal of the NPT. This plan has been signed by several representatives, but for it to be an official decision, coordination and consolidation of the pillars of the system is necessary,” he explained.

“If one day the pillars of the Islamic system come to the conclusion that membership of the NPT is no longer beneficial, but harms us, they will obviously make appropriate decisions,” he added.

Iran signed the NPT in 1968 and ratified it in 1970. Its signature implies accepting the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to guarantee that the use of nuclear energy is exclusively peaceful, thus renouncing the development of nuclear weapons.
