Syria protests to Jordanian ambassador over Monday’s deadly bombings

The Syrian Foreign Ministry summoned this Wednesday the Jordanian ambassador to the country, Sufian Quda, in protest against the bombings carried out earlier this week against southern Syria that have left at least nine civilians dead, although the Jordanian authorities have claimed to have killed more than 20 members of the Islamic State.

The diplomatic portfolio has limited itself to reporting the summons of the Jordanian representative in Damascus, in statements to the state news agency SANA, a day after condemning in the “most strongly” way the attacks on Monday against the province of Daraa.

“This action constituted an unacceptable violation of Syrian airspace, carried out without any prior coordination, and caused several deaths and injuries,” denounced the Syrian Government, contradicting the Armed Forces of the neighboring country, which assured that the operation – in response to the attack against the church of Saint George, in central Jordan – had been carried out “in coordination” with Damascus.

This same Wednesday, local authorities visited families of the victims in the municipalities of Al Ashihab and Al Taf, in the provinces of Sueida and Daraa respectively, the Syrian news channel Al Ijbaria reported. Thus, the representatives were accompanied by the Ministers of Information and Culture, Khaled Zaarur and Yasín Salé, as well as the President of Parliament, Abdul Hamid al Awak, and several deputies.

The Jordanian Army framed these attacks in an operation called ‘Jordanian Deterrence’ and “in retaliation” for the attack perpetrated last Friday against a church in the town of Hamud that left nine dead and thirty injured, and for which three men from the same family were arrested.
