Eight dead after stampede at Kinshasa concert

Seven spectators and a policeman were killed in a stampede during a concert in the largest stadium in the Congolese capital Kinshasa on Saturday evening.

“Eight people, including a policeman, were killed at the concert of singer Fally Ipupa at the Martyrs Stadium,” said Kinshasa police. A police officer at the scene told the agency that “a stampede” was at the origin of the drama.

The Martyrs Stadium, which has a capacity of 80,000 seats, was filled to the brim for Fally Ipupa’s concert. According to a witness, even the stadium’s corridors were overflowing with fans of the 44-year-old star.
