Estonia becomes the first country to publicly support a no – fly zone for Ukraine

The Estonian Parliament has approved this Monday a document in which, among other aspects, it asks the UN Member States to take the necessary measures to establish a no-fly zone in Ukraine to protect the lives of civilians, becoming the first country to publicly support this measure.

Specifically, the document approved in the Riigikogu with 90 votes in favor is addressed to the parliaments of the rest of the member countries of the European Union (EU) and NATO, in addition to the parliaments of other countries, and addresses different aspects of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Thus, he expresses his support for the Ukrainian citizens in their fight against Russia, a country that he has said has started a “criminal war”, while he has asked to show “absolute support” to Ukraine “in its struggle to maintain freedom, sovereignty and territorial integrity”.

The Estonian Parliament has underlined that Russia’s unprovoked aggression and military activities constitute a crime and has pointed to the need to punish all war crimes that may be committed within the framework of the offensive. In addition, it has called on states to close their airspace and ports to Russian aircraft and ships.

On the other hand, it has urged the parliaments of other countries to adopt similar positions and ask their governments to support the imposition of additional sanctions against Russia and also against Belarus, a country that it has accused of “participating” in the aggression, according to what it collects. a statement from the Estonian Parliament itself. Thus, he has called for the imposition of a trade embargo on both countries, which could restrict the ability of Moscow and Minsk to finance the war.

Likewise, he has asked the members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to vote to exclude Russia from the institution and considers that the member states must adopt a “relevant” decision on this matter “immediately”. In this sense, he has also asked the members of the EU to support Ukraine being considered a candidate state for accession and to be guaranteed a ‘road map’ that culminates in its entry into NATO.
