The US imposed a veto: the Palestinian Authority will not receive full membership in the United Nations
A discussion was held tonight (Friday) in the UN Security Council on the Palestinian Authority’s request to receive full membership in the UN. 12 companies voted in favor, Switzerland and Great Britain abstained from voting, and the United States chose to veto – and the proposal fell. After the discussion, the American representative said: “Peace in the region can only come as a result of a two-state solution. There is no other way that guarantees Israel’s security and its future as a Jewish and democratic state, there is no other way that will lead to normalization between Israel and its neighbors – including Saudi Arabia. The PA needs to make reforms in order to prepare to receive status of a state. Hamas controls Gaza, which is part of the future Palestinian state, so we voted against the decision. Our vote is not an opposition to a Palestinian state, but an emphasis that it will only happen as a result of direct negotiations between the parties.”

The foreign minister welcomed the decision of the United States, and said: “I congratulate the United States for vetoing this distorted proposal that was rejected today by the UN Security Council. It is outrageous that even half a year after the October 7th massacre, the Security Council failed to condemn the terrible crimes of Hamas. There will be no prizes for terrorism. Israel will continue to fight until the fall of Hamas and the release of all 133 Israeli abductees.”

About three weeks ago, as you recall, the Security Council adopted a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during Ramadan and the immediate and unconditional release of all the abductees. 14 countries voted in favor of the decision. The United States did not use its veto power, and abstained from voting. The UN Security Council said after the vote that “there is an urgent need to increase aid to Gaza, and we demand that all obstacles to its transfer be removed.”
