Göttingen – Another nasty attack on a politician!

Marie Kollenrott, a member of the Göttingen state parliament for the Alliance 90/The Greens party, was attacked by a man in downtown Göttingen on Saturday at around 1:05 p.m.

The incident occurred during an election campaign event in the busy pedestrian zone near the Old Town Hall. The politician suffered minor injuries to her arms in the attack.

Die police was able to catch the suspected attacker shortly afterwards near the crime scene. The 66-year-old man from Göttingen was released after the police measures had been completed and his identity had been established on the spot.

The State Security Commission has taken over further investigations against him, including for bodily harm.

Blows to the upper body

The politician told the Göttinger Tageblatt that she had scratches and a red arm. “I’m in shock,” said the 39-year-old.

Witnesses intervened

It could have been even worse. But several people immediately intervened when the man attacked them.

In fact, Marie Kollenrott and a witness followed the man and alerted the police at the same time, according to a police spokeswoman.

Marie Kollenrott has been a member of the state parliament since 2021. She is a member of the Committee on Environment, Energy, Construction and Climate Protection.
