A wave of destructive forest fires is raging these days in large areas of Southern Europe and the West Coast of the United States, while leading to the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents, to the death and destruction of hundreds of buildings, and threatens the tourism economy of the peak of the season. From the pine groves of France and the Greek islands to Washington state, emergency crews are battling fast-spreading flames under the cover of intense heat, zero humidity and unpredictable high winds.
The crisis is putting heavy pressure on the local economies, especially in the Mediterranean region, where the peak of the tourism season and the billions in revenue coincide with the peak of the wave of fires. As local emergency crews and firefighters flown in from around the world try to bring the blaze under control, the economic damage is piling up and prompting questions about long-term prevention strategy, open space management and hiker safety.
The dimensions of the destruction of fires around the world are reaching unprecedented levels. In southern Europe, millions of dunams were burned, and the economic damages in the Eurozone countries reach billions of euros. In Greece, more than 8,000 residents and tourists were evacuated on the island of Crete alongside fires that spread on the outskirts of Athens, while firefighting teams from the European Union were rushed to the country. In Spain, there has been an extensive loss of forest areas, where a decrease in investment in prevention leads to extinguishing costs that jump per square kilometer. In France, the flames consumed over 420 thousand dunams in the Gironde region, and only now is the slow return of tourists to the resort towns beginning after the fire was brought under control. Across the ocean, in the state of Washington in the United States, about 60 thousand people were evacuated in the Spokane area and more than 600 buildings were destroyed under the shadow of the declaration of a state of emergency.
An economic blow to tourism in the Mediterranean and evacuations by sea
In Greece, the severe fires hit the heart of the tourism industry. On the island of Crete, one of the main holiday destinations, there were widespread emergency evacuations after the flames moved quickly towards coastal towns and populated areas. As mentioned, about 8,000 residents and travelers were evacuated to safe shelters in centers such as Heraklion, Chania, Rethamno and Agios Nikolaos. In the Attica region, west of Athens, the strong winds pushed the fire towards tourist and residential areas near Porto Germano, and when land roads were blocked, emergency teams had to rescue vacationers and residents by sea. In the nearby Mount Poikilo, patients were evacuated from a local medical facility.
Despite the drama, the main transport infrastructures in Greece, including the international airports and ferry lines, continue to operate as normal, and the countries of the world advise travelers to be alert and obey the instructions on the spot, without issuing sweeping travel warnings.
The economic consequences in Southern Europe go far beyond the direct expenses of the shutdown. Updated data show that the economic damage in the five most affected countries in the Eurozone, France, Spain, Portugal, Greece and Romania, crossed the threshold of 3.1 billion euros in the first two months of the fire season, above the annual average of the Union which stands at 2.5 billion euros.
In Spain, where a loss of approximately 4 million dunams was recorded, the discussion surrounding the failure to prevent fires became particularly heated: the annual investment in fire prevention fell from 364 million euros in 2009 to 144 million euros in 2024, while the expenditure on extinguishing remained stable at approximately 417 million euros per year. When the cost of extinguishing 10 kilometers is estimated at 19,000 euros, experts make it clear that clearing the forests is proven to be much cheaper and more profitable.
In southwestern France, firefighters have gained control of a huge fire that consumed over 420,000 hectares of pine forests in the Gironde region, destroyed over 240 houses and forced the evacuation of hundreds of residents near Arcachon Bay. Now the tourists are gradually starting to return, but the local business owners, whose livelihood is based on the tourism industry that produces 7 percent of the regional GDP, remain worried about the continuation of the drought.
A state of emergency in Washington state
Across the Atlantic, the West Coast of the United States is also facing a devastating fire season. In the state of Washington, Governor Bob Ferguson declared a state of emergency and imposed a blanket ban on burning fires in open areas. The main focus of the flames is raging in the downtown Spokane area, where three huge fires called Old Trails, Fairview and Autumn Lane, spread quickly due to strong winds and extreme dryness.
The fire forced the evacuation of about 60,000 residents, including hospital patients, and consumed at least 600 homes, businesses and buildings. The city’s convention center became an emergency evacuation center, and thousands of residents were left without power due to damage to transmission infrastructure, while thousands of firefighters are working at the same time as other huge fires in Oregon and Idaho.
Climate experts explain that the extreme intensity of the fires is caused by a phenomenon known as “climate whiplash”, sharp transitions between a very wet season that encourages increased growth, and heavy heat waves and drought that dry out the vegetation and turn it into a flammable material. In addition, the abandonment of agricultural lands and uncontrolled forestry, mainly in Europe, created a wide succession of dry vegetation without treatment. When these areas burn in the intense heat, they produce fire clouds (Pyrocumulonimbus), thunderstorms that form from the fire itself, push hot air and smoke to a great height, and produce lightning many kilometers away from the original focus of the fire. The unexpected gusts of wind created by the phenomenon put firefighters at risk, wipe out fire lines within minutes, and fuel fires with an intensity that traditional extinguishing methods have difficulty stopping.
