Foreign tourists were hit by a train while sitting close to ‘train street’ in Hanoi

At around 1:30 p.m. on August 7, a group of 4 Chinese tourists went to the Kham Thien train street area to film the train passing by. A female tourist sat close to the tracks, holding a phone to record. When the train approached, the locomotive collided with this person, causing the phone to be thrown away.

The incident did not cause personal injury but the phone was damaged. The female tourist left the scene afterward.

On the afternoon of August 11, a representative of the Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam ward police, Hanoi, said they had fined the coffee business at 14B, building 28C, Nha Dau collective – where the incident occurred – 2.5 million VND for violating the railway safety corridor, allowing customers to sit close to the tracks, leading to a collision.

After the incident, the Police Department of Administrative Management of Social Order and Hanoi City Police requested Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam Ward Police to arrange forces to ensure security, order, traffic safety and public order in the area.

The train street cafe area attracts mainly foreign visitors to experience the sight of trains passing by in a narrow space. Some businesses often invite customers to sit close to the tracks, and even arrange staff to stand outside to “watch” the authorities. When they discovered the authorities, the restaurant staff quickly cleared up the tables and chairs and brought customers inside.

In November 2025, Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam ward police coordinated forces to inspect, clear and handle violations of the railway traffic safety corridor in this area. However, some coffee businesses continue to open their doors to welcome customers, placing tables and chairs close to the railway tracks.
