La Jornada: El Inbal and other instances will remember José Revueltas 50 years after his death

Today marks half a century since the death of the communist writer, politician and intellectual José Revueltas (1914-1976), so cultural entities such as the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (Inbal) will carry out activities in his honor.

In addition, the National Institute of Historical Studies of the Revolutions of Mexico (INEHRM) will hold a discussion on the author’s political life.

with the title 50 years of José Revueltas: Infinite spiral, The Inbal event will begin at 6 p.m. in the Manuel M. Ponce room of the Palacio de Bellas Artes, with the screening of the short documentary Revueltas films: Family Archives, written and directed by Gilda Revueltas, granddaughter of the author.

The piece offers an intimate look through materials filmed by the writer himself along with his children, grandchildren and his first wife, Olivia, making visible his role as a filmmaker, a little explored aspect of his creativity.

Subsequently, a dialogue table will be held with the participation of Edith Negrín, researcher and editor; Carlos Narro, academic specialized in the cinema and screenwriting work of Revueltas; José Manuel Mateo, researcher of his essay and narrative, and the poet, painter, sculptor, filmmaker and anthropologist Gilda Revueltas.

The tribute will end with a proposal by the singer Ada Carasusan, great-granddaughter of the writer of The errors y He learned, who will set some of the writer’s poems to music, with the title Earthly songs.

Gilda Revueltas explained that these activities seek to integrate different approaches to the life and work of the author, and recover his contributions to cinema and poetry. “We emphasize its cinematographic aspect, which had been left in the background, but which is valuable.”

For its part, the INEHRM, in collaboration with the Institute of Culture of the State of Durango, will carry out, from April 13 to 18, a cycle of activities in honor of the social fighter.

There will be reading circles, book presentations and talks, as well as special programming on the radio station of the Universidad Juárez de Durango.

Among the dialogue tables is The political and intellectual life of José Revueltas, in which the opinion coordinator of this newspaper, Luis Hernández Navarro, Carlos Illades and María Eugenia Espinosa will participate, today at 12 noon. The event will be broadcast live through the Facebook pages of these institutions. Likewise, Radio Educación will present today a program in honor of the writer, which includes the reading of fragments of his novels The earthly days y Human mourning.

Meanwhile, the General Directorate of Libraries, in the Library of Mexico, in conjunction with the publishing house Verso Destierro, will carry out activities such as the exhibition of the LC Smith & Corona typewriter – facilitated by Kayani Revueltas, granddaughter of the honoree –, in which the author typed The walls of water.

The poem “Speech by José Revueltas to the dogs of Parque Hundido” by Enrique González Rojo Arthur will also be read.

The Permanent Seminar of Mexican Philosophy, of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, will join the activities with a tribute today from 12 to 2 p.m. in the Tatiana Sule Fernández classroom.
