The US internet company Google is, according to a media report, one Contract with the US Department of Defense which concerns the use of its AI models to work with data under secrecy. The agreement allows the Pentagon to use Google AI for “any lawful government purpose,” The Information newspaper reported on Monday (local time), citing a person familiar with the matter.
This would put Google ahead of its competitors OpenAI and xAI by Elon Musk who also have contracts with the Pentagon for the use of AI models in secret areas. Google parent company Alphabet and the US Department of Defense could not immediately be reached for comment. A spokesman for Google’s US government business told The Information that the new agreement is an addition to an existing contract.
The Pentagon had already signed contracts worth up to $200 million (170.23 million euros) with major AI providers such as Anthropic, OpenAI and Google in 2025. The ministry wants to ensure flexibility in the defense sector and not be restricted by warnings from technology developers about the use of unreliable artificial intelligence (AI) in weapon systems. US President Donald Trump has ordered the department to rename itself the Department of War, although this still requires congressional approval.
