2nd Bundesliga: 1-1 against Bochum on the “Alm”: Bielefeld still has to worry

Late goal conceded in the anniversary game: Second division soccer team Arminia Bielefeld missed a break in the relegation battle. Against VfL Bochum, the East Westphalians, wearing anniversary jerseys, couldn’t get beyond a 1-1 (1-0) draw at the 100-year-old stadium location and missed the 200th second division home win in the club’s history. Bochum, on the other hand, now has 40 points and should be able to plan for another second division season.

First, Joel Grodowski gave Bielefeld a 1-0 lead with a penalty kick (27′). The braver Bochum team equalized through substitute Moritz-Broni Kwarteng in the 79th minute to make the final score a deserved 1-1.

Red for Arminia coach Kniat after the final whistle

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the football location on Melanchthonstrasse with the first game on May 1, 1926, the nameplates “Schüco-Arena” were replaced by signs with the traditional name “Stadion Alm” for the game against Bochum.

A foul by Cajetan Lenz on Robin Knoche, which was exposed by the video assistant, enabled Grodowski to score Bielefeld’s opening goal with his fifth penalty of the season (27th). Bochum’s initially disappointing team became much more courageous in the second half and finally got a deserved point thanks to Kwarteng’s goal. Shortly after the final whistle, Bielefeld’s complaining coach Mitch Kniat saw a red card from referee Tobias Stieler.
