Former national goalkeeping coach Andreas Köpke would like Manuel Neuer to take part in the World Cup. “No one knows whether anything else will happen. The simple fact is that normally the best should play at the World Cup,” said Köpke (64) at an event organized by his long-time club 1. FC Nürnberg and supplier Adidas in Scheinfeld in Central Franconia. “Manu is still the best. My personal opinion: I would like him to play again. But I don’t believe it.”
Neuer resigned from the national team in 2024 after the home European Championships. National coach Julian Nagelsmann then appointed Marc-André ter Stegen as number one, but he has been out injured for most of the time since then. The national coach has now made Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann his World Cup goalkeeper.

After Neuer’s top performance, a debate broke out as to whether the FC Bayern Munich keeper should be nominated. “Basically, everything has been said on the subject. You can always rehash it. Manu has actually made himself clear, Nagelsmann has made himself clear,” said Neuer’s long-time confidant Köpke, who became European champion in 1996 as a national goalkeeper.
A few weeks ago, Neuer spoke in more detail about discussions about a comeback in the national soccer team. “There will be the World Cup, but I’m not there at the moment and I’m not part of it at all and that’s why I’m watching it from the outside in a relaxed manner,” said the 40-year-old FC Bayern goalkeeper in the ZDF sports studio.
Nagelsmann will announce his 26-man squad for the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico on May 21st. The finals run from June 11th to July 19th.
