Hungarian Parliament elects Pèter Magyar as Prime Minister

The members of the parliament in Budapest elected the pro-European conservative Péter Hungarian as Prime Minister and successor to the long-time head of government Viktor Orbán.

140 MPs voted for Magyar, 54 against him, and one MP abstained. Four MPs were not present for the vote.

Celebration atmosphere in Budapest

Parallel to the solemn ceremony in parliament, the “People’s Festival for System Change” will take place on Kossuth Square and on the banks of the Danube, with a military and flag parade, organized by Magyar and his party TISZA. The festival is intended to celebrate the change of government, which will lead Hungary into a “new era”.

With the election and the taking of the oath of office of the 45-year-old, the era of the right-wing national Prime Minister Orbán finally comes to an end after 16 years. His center-right Respect and Freedom (TISZA) party has a two-thirds majority in parliament after a historic election victory on April 12.

As early as next Tuesday, at a parliamentary session, the President of the Republic could Tamás Sulyok appointed minister to be sworn in. The new government can then be formed.

The new speaker of parliament became president on Saturday Agnes Forsthoffer sworn. In her first decision, the tourism entrepreneur ordered the EU flag to be hoisted again at the parliament building. After their announcement, the blue and yellow EU flag was immediately hoisted at Parliament.
