The Pentagon has released a vast archive of previously classified documents on unidentified flying objects (UFOs), including decades of descriptions of sightings reported by civilians on Earth and astronauts on the Moon. These documents, which span more than a decade, were declassified and published online at the behest of US President Donald Trump, who announced their release earlier this year “due to the enormous interest”.
In recent years, the United States has experienced a resurgence of public interest in extraterrestrial life. In 2022, Congress held its first hearings on UFOs in 50 years, and the military promised greater transparency on the subject. A total of 162 files are available on the new website of the Ministry of Defense, and it has been announced that more materials will be published soon. The announcement comes after former President Barack Obama also sparked interest by saying that aliens are “real, but I haven’t seen them,” although he later clarified that statistically there is a high probability of life elsewhere, but that he had not seen evidence of it during his tenure.
Apollo astronauts described flashes of light
The archive contains previously confidential transcripts of the conversations of astronauts from the Apollo 11, Apollo 12 and Apollo 17 missions, which landed on the Moon in the 1960s and 1970s. Buzz Aldrin, the famous astronaut of the Apollo 11 mission, in an interview from 1969, which has now been published, stated that during the trip to the moon he noticed several unexplained phenomena.
- I observed what looked like a very bright light source, which we temporarily attributed to a possible laser – he said.
Transcripts show that Apollo 12 astronaut Alan Bean, who walked on the moon in 1969, stated that he saw čestics and flashes of light “floating through space.” Č it seemed, according to him, as if they were “coming out of the moon”. Two astronauts on the Apollo 17 mission in 1972 also reported flickering lights.
- Looks like the ČFourth of July! – said astronaut Jack Schmitt, adding that the light could be a reflection of pieces of ice.
In another published document, an audio recording of the Gemini 7 space flight from 1965, it records astronaut Frank Boman’s conversation with ground control. He reports the sighting of an unidentified object to NASA’s control room, describing both a “widow” and “billions of tiny particles” to the left of the spacecraft.
Military hearings and unsolved cases
Among the published reports, there are dozens of individual testimonies about sightings of unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP). One file states that a man told the FBI in 1957 that he witnessed a large circular vehicle leaving the ground. There are also more recent interviews from 2023 in which American citizens talk about metallic objects floating in the air and materializing in the midst of bright light.
The archive also includes videos recorded by US armed forces in the Middle East in 2022. Footage from Iraq, Syria and the United Arab Emirates shows what the Pentagon’s website describes as an “unidentified and unexplained anomalous phenomenon.” One image from 2022, from an undisclosed location in the Middle East, shows an oval-shaped object crossing the screen, labeled a “potential missile” in an accompanying report.
The new materials contain pilot reports of a triangular and metallic UAP over the Mediterranean, as well as a luminous object “in the shape of a soccer ball” that was moving indiscriminately through restricted airspace near Japan. The Pentagon admitted that many of the published files refer to “unsolved cases” in which the government could not definitively determine the nature of the observed phenomena, as reported by the BBC.
Mixed reactions: “Good start” or distraction?
Tennessee Republican Rep. Tim Burchett, who has previously pushed for more government transparency about UFOs, welcomed the release of the dossier, calling it a “very good start” in a post on X. Republican Anna Paulina Luna, a representative from Florida, also advocated for transparency on the issue and called the announcement “a huge first step in the right direction.”
However, former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a former Trump ally, said the announcement was distracting from more pressing issues facing Americans, such as rising prices and the war in Iran.
“I’m sick of the ‘look at the shiny object’ propaganda,” Greene wrote on Xu.
What does the announcement mean for ufologists?
The publication of the documents was eagerly awaited by the community of ufologists. Researchers and enthusiasts believe that the announcement is a step towards greater transparency and answers about what is happening “up there”.
“While previous administrations have failed to be transparent on this issue, thanks to these new documents and videos, the public can form their own opinion: ‘BUT WHAT HAPPENED?'” Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social after the documents were released. “Have fun and enjoy!”
John Erik Ege, MUFON (Mutual UFO Network) regional director for Texas, said he was “intrigued.”
- I think it’s a step in the right direction. I don’t think they’re trying to hide anything, but the information they’re posting is stuff we already knowć a long time. No new details. There is no concrete evidence that they have bodies or that they have made contact, but I hope we are going in the right direction – said Ege.
Despiteč disclosure of confidential military information and testimonies, the published archive does not contain any revolutionary discoveries or confirmation of the existence of extraterrestrial life. Nevertheless, it represents the latest and clearest admission by the US government that it has been investigating sightings of unidentified objects.
