The FC Bayern basketball players have hired long-time Ulm head coach and sports director Thorsten Leibenath as sports director. The 51-year-old will succeed Dragan Tarlac at the defending Bundesliga champions in the summer, who is leaving Munich after two years. It was said that the Serb had asked for a separation for personal reasons.
With Leibenath, the German industry leader wants to be successful nationally and internationally in the future after a disappointing season in the Euroleague. Club president Herbert Hainer called Leibenath “an excellent expert on the national and international basketball scene.”
Indication of a new coach?
It is possible that the Leverkusen native will see Anton Gavel again at Bayern: the ex-professional – currently head coach in Bamberg – is considered a candidate for the coaching position. Munich needs a new coach after the season because old master Svetislav Pesic is quitting. Leibenath and Gavel became champions in Ulm in 2023 as those responsible for sports.
