Fatah’s eighth congress began five years late

The Fatah movement, which rules the Palestinian Authority, is holding its eighth congress. It is attended by 2,580 delegates and meets simultaneously in Ramallah, Gaza, Cairo and Beirut.

According to the charter, the congress was supposed to take place in 2021. Participants will elect an 18-member Central Committee and a Revolutionary Council, which includes 80 Fatah activists. Opponents of the movement claim that delegates were carefully selected to ensure the result the leadership wanted.

An issue that is not on the agenda of the congress, but is central, concerns the successor to the current Fatah leader and chairman of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, who is already 90 years old. The leading candidate to replace him is the “Vice President of Palestine” Hussein al-Sheikh.
