Maduro’s son said that his father is being held in a common cell with 18 prisoners in the United States

The son of former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, deputy Nicolas Maduro Guerra, said in an interview with Der Spiegel that his father, who is in a New York prison after being detained by the US military in January 2026, has not been kept in solitary confinement since Easter week, but in a shared cell with 18 other prisoners.

About half the inmates speak Spanish, Maduro Guerra said, and the former Venezuelan leader communicates with them, watches TV and teaches them English.

Maduro’s son expressed concern about his father’s conditions of detention, saying that he was used to a healthy diet, but in prison he received “mostly carbohydrates, highly processed food, too much salt.”

In the United States, Maduro and his wife Celia Flores face charges, including narco-terrorism; Maduro denies these accusations.
