La Jornada: UNAM installs council to promote AI with ethics and public vision

If artificial intelligence (AI) is used with ethics and public vision, it can become one of the educational and scientific tools of our time, agreed the head of the Secretariat of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation (Secihti), Rosaura Ruiz and the rector of UNAM, Leonardo Lomelí.

When presiding over the installation of the AI Coordinating Council (CCOIA) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), both pointed out that it is not enough for AI to offer productivity and competition, speed and automation of processes, what matters is whether these systems respect rights, protect dignity, reduce inequalities and are environmentally sustainable.

The rector of the highest house of studies emphasized that it is not only a matter of accompanying the advancement of technological processes, but of conducting their evolution and use in accordance with university principles.

He reiterated the conviction of the national university that knowledge is a tool whose strength lies in its careful production, its open circulation and its projection towards collective well-being.

“When knowledge is linked with ethical principles and social commitment, it becomes one of the most powerful instruments to face specific problems and open paths of hope. That must then be the central purpose of artificial intelligence and all its possible applications,” he stressed.

For her part, Rosaura Ruiz highlighted that AI is one of the great scientific and technological transformations of our time; However, he added that it should not distance us from humanity but rather help us better understand our capabilities, responsibilities and possibilities as a society.

In the installation of this council, the Secretary of Institutional Development of the UNAM, Tamara Martínez, indicated that the mission of the CCOIA is to enhance and convert knowledge into strategy, in order to unite research, teaching, ethics, governance, sustainability, culture and rights in a multiple, plural and institutional root.

“Make the collective intelligence of the university dialogue with itself, strengthen and expand,” he concluded.
