The State Duma adopted a law on the seizure of property of Russians who fled the country and oppose the authorities

The State Duma of Russia adopted in the second and third readings a bill authorizing the seizure of the property of Russians who left the country and opposed the foundations of the constitutional system, state and public security of the Russian Federation.

According to The Moscow Times, the list includes “discrediting” the Russian Armed Forces, participation in “undesirable organizations,” violating the order of the “foreign agent” activities, calls for sanctions, abuse of freedom of the media, dissemination of extremist materials, identifying the role of the USSR and Nazi Germany in the Second World War.

The law allows property to be seized regardless of the amount of the fine imposed – for a minimum amount you can lose your apartment. Cases will be considered in the absence of the accused: the person involved in the case will be assigned a public defender and notified of the court’s decision by mail. The law is due to come into force on September 1, 2026.

“There are striking examples indicating that on the territories of foreign states, various public leaders and activists are carrying out activities directed against the interests of the Russian Federation,” the accompanying note notes.

The initiator of the law was State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin. “Relocant, who, with the money of Western sponsors, calls for terrorism and extremism, justifies Nazism, insults our soldiers and officers, must realize that he will have to answer for this,” he said the day before.
