In the video introducing Safari’s private data security capabilities, Apple implies that the Chrome browser does not protect users from trackers.
The video posted on May 4 describes how users are always stuck by online tracking tools when browsing the web on their phones. The “stalkers” appear in silver suits similar to chrome plating. The word chrome was also mentioned by a character in the video, making viewers think of Google’s browser.
Online tracking tools are a danger that many security companies have warned about as all user behavior such as web browsing information, history, screen interface, even passwords, and credit card information can be exposed. The reason mostly comes from the fact that the web browser is not secure enough to control third-party cookies or extensions of unknown origin.
Apple “twisted” the Chrome browser in the new Safari introduction video. Video: Apple
Google Chrome is the most popular operating system today but also has many problems related to private data security. According to a report by LayerX Security, 71% of extensions on the Chrome Web Store do not come with a privacy policy, making it impossible for users to verify the collected data. In April, 82 Chrome extensions publicly sold user data to third parties, affecting 6.5 million users.
With the new update, Safari is considered the most “powerful” browser with extensions. Users are notified about the data the extension wants to access and can restrict that access to specific websites or just for a day. Apple’s browser will also proactively block extensions that attempt to read screens, passwords, or credit card information. Safari is also the first major browser to have blocked all third-party cookies since 2019 to protect users.
In private browsing mode, Apple claims Safari actually blocks trackers and applies advanced protections. It does not save any data related to websites visited, searches or text entered. Browsers also automatically remove unnecessary tracking parameters that websites often add to the end of paths (URLs). Private tabs can be locked with Face ID or Touch ID.
The new Safari uses machine learning to identify trackers, instantly delete their data, and hide the user’s IP address from identified trackers. It will also notify users of blocked programs as well as prevent data companies from trying to identify users based on device characteristics (configuration, font, screen resolution) with the Anti-Fingerprinting feature.
In addition to focusing on privacy protection capabilities, Safari also has the advantage of battery life. If you watch videos on the same device, using Safari can give the battery up to 5 hours longer than using Chrome.
However, Safari is still less popular than Chrome, partly because it is only available on Apple devices such as iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The version for Windows computers has stopped supporting since 2010 and there has never been a version for Android phones. This also makes it difficult for users who use multi-platform devices, leading to the fact that the extensions are not really rich.
